Acer 5742g power led flashes 5 times and won't start

Is there a simple fix or is it memory related

Not memory-related I don't think. It usually means the a/c adapter/charger is faulty and needs replacing.

Test with a friend's a/c adapter first if possible (but check that the voltages match before doing so) because my diagnosis may be wrong.
