Acer 5920G. Startup probs.'Windows error recovery' msg.

After switching on, 'Windows error recovery' msg appears. BUT 'Launch startup repair' won't activate, and 'Start windows normally' shows timebar, but will not move on.

I would suspect a problem with your hard drive here - you should be able to run Seatools for DOS http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/ to run a diagnostics on your hard drive.

Thank you, but I can't get onto the web to run the Seatools diagnostics... Any further ideas?

You would need to download the program, extract it and copy it on to CD to run on your machine - the machine you're sending this from should be able to do that (unless it's a phone)
