Question Acer ASPIRE3 A15-34

This is a brand new laptop, I was of the understanding that there was a soldered 4 gig and 1 slot and that the maximum capacity that the computer can take is 12gig, I bought an 8gig stick of compatible ram and put this in, however, it is only recognising 8 gig not the full 12, this is very frustrating. I am not very tech savvy these days so would appreciate any help that you can give.
