200K test:

33 kbit/sec

1.758s latency
50.044s d/l time.

Well, it's been a long week, both on the phone and down the road at my
local Verizon Store. As the test results above show, I finally got
above 14K in my connection speed. I'm still not up at the 80-90K I'm
supposed to get on their 3G network, but it's a definite improvement.
I'm inclined, until further tests, to ascribe the shortfall to signal
strength at this location. And wait a bit.

The problem turned out to be something wrong with the original modem
installation from the Mobile Office installation CD. The tech at
Verizon didn't have a clue, but he did suggest that I call Kyocera
since I bought the kit there. Both Kyocera and Verizon insist that
the Mobile Office Kits are supposed to be identical from both, only
the Kyocera Kit costs about 35 bucks instead of 69. Which is why I
bought it there.

The Kyocera tech said I should reinstall the modem from CD. I told
him I had already replaced the INF file from their website. He
couldn't figure anything else out, so when I got home I tried it out
and it worked. The laptop now communicates with the phone/modem at
115,000K. It still won't work at 230,400, but 115K is way faster than
the connection to the server, so that's good enough.

But wait, there's more!

Somehow in the process of adding and subtracting features and plans,
by several techs, Verizon's computer has lost my second phone! It
shows as deactivated on their screens, but it still receives and sends
at the same number it always did. Same thing on the website. Only
the national singlerate phone shows.

Go figure.

I'm scared to mess with it. The second phone is supposed to be on
America's Choice 400 minutes, so I think I'll just use it that way for
the next 10 days until my bill comes in. I have no doubt , with all
the changes and confusion, that I'll be billed wrong anyway, and have
to go down and get it cleared up then, so I'll save this mystery till
then. Maybe it will solve itself. The tech at the store said she had
never seen a phone number that showed as deactivated that worked
anyway. Some kind of glitch.

Anyhow, I'm much faster now, and all it took was a week of worry and
frustration, and only wore out maybe 8 or 10 so-called techs in all.
What a bargain!

SO what was the REAL secret to making your phone faster? Is it the 3g or
some other setting?

Give em hell later and make sure they give you a hefty credit for their
screw-up! My Jan bill was $5 from their dumb mistakes.
