Agfa Snapscan 1212p XP Drivers & Software

I have an Agfa Snapscan 1212p with a power button on the front, which I use quite a lot. I have been wanted to upgrade my system to Windows Xp but this scanner will not work with XP. I have tried to contact Agfa but they never reply to my emails!

So now I need your help. I use Agfa Snapscan and Fotolook both version 3.00, I need a version of this software which will work with Windows XP and I also need drivers which will allow me to use this scanner without any problems.

My current version of Windows is Me - now you understand why I want to use XP. I am using the drivers and software that came with scanner.

Please help. My funds are low!

You may be out of luck. Agfa stopped its desktop scanner and digital camera business in September of 2001, which is the most likely reason why you aren't getting an answer to your e-mail. However, this site may have a workable beta driver:

As for the software, you may be forced to try something else in combination with the scanner. Agfa has made it clear that the latest versions of the software (FotoLook 3.6) does not support parallel port scanners. And neither will ScanWise 2.0 and the included driver.

Take note that some users found problems using the scanner unless the parallel port was set to standard in the BIOS, instead of ECP, when running Win2K. The same thing may apply to WinXP.

Personally, if I was in your shoes, and couldn't afford a new scanner ... <i>and</i> managed to get the scanner recognized in WinXP, I'd be looking for better software for scanning; something like <A HREF="http://www.hamrick.com/" target="_new">VueScan</A> or <A HREF="http://www.silverfast.com/highlights/en.html" target="_new">Silverfast</A>, if you can't manage to appropriate a recent copy of Photoshop, or other graphics software near that caliber.

There is two types of 1212p scanner one with and one without a power button - I know there is a driver for the non-button scanner but will this driver work with the 1212p with the power button. Have u tried this software under Windows XP and if so how stable was it

Regarding ur issue with the parallel port settings, the scanner has to be on ECP, EPP (which one is better?) as on standard it takes ages, confronts me with an error message saying it needs to be in EPP/ECP mode and the final output has Red, Blue and Green dots staioned in random places around the scanned picture.

Supposedly, this driver should function with the 1212p scanner, with the power button. Whether or not it actually works under WinXP is another story, including the stability issue. I suspect that this is a modified Win2K driver, and as such, whether it will run correctly is anyone's guess. The person who posted the driver seems to be under the impression that it will work, which is certainly better than nothing.

I don't own the scanner that you are using, (I prefer MicroTek scanners), and so, when I saw that you were having a problem, I searched around the 'Net until I saw a possible solution. I also dug into the Agfa website, looking for updated software that could function with the beta driver in WinXP, and it didn't exist ... which I why I posted links to software that might function as a replacement with that scanner, considering that your budget is tight, and you probably can't afford to purchase higher-end graphics software.

Of course, software like this can be found on the 'Net for "free", but that's another story. Obtaining software in this method is definitely illegal, shouldn't be discussed over a public forum, and certainly requires a bit of extra-diligent searching. Having a broadband connection in a situation like this is also something of an asset.

As for ECP vs EPP ... here are a couple of links that might help you understand the differences between the two:

Personally, if I was in your predicament, I'd get another USB 2.0/Firewire/SCSI scanner ... one from a company that intends to support new versions of Windows as they are released, such as MicroTek, Canon, or Epson. (And from a company that still has a division devoted to desktop scanners.) I'd also do a little discreet Web hunting for decent graphics software. OR ... if either of those things sounds disturbing and/or expensive, I'd dual-boot WinME and WinXP, so I could continue to use my current hardware and software.

That's about all I can say on the subject. I hope it works out for you.

Thank you for your help. I'll give the drivers a try on my friends PC which has XP. Or I'll find an Me Cd and set up a dual boot system. Failing that my father will just have to stop cheaping out on the PC peripherals and this will be a good excuse to get a nice HP Scanjet 5550!!!!!!!!!
