AMD rx 480, should I wait for the laptop version of the card?

Well, AMD just announced the rx 480, set to come out at the end of June for $200. Should I wait for an m version to be released, or? I have been waiting a bit to buy a gaming laptop that'll last me about 4 years for college. Do you think I'll be able to get my hands on one with a 480 in before August?

Solution
Nvidia does not always have better performance. You have no idea how well polaris will do when there are no cards out to be tested. It's all conjecture.

Stop really. Look at any of the mobile r9 and they can play on ultra like nvidia, not low. Just because nvidia had the top spot doesn't mean amd had nothing powerful.

Polaris more budget friendly? Stop for the third time. Both nvidia and amd have different models at different price points and there is no telling how well polaris will do to see price/performance comparison.

Polaris/pascal is the codenames for amd/nvidia next(or current actually now) gen architecture. They should be coming out at a similar time as desktop. All I saw was mid 2016.

There will be higher end polaris. There's a reason it's only $200 and has 4 or 8gb vram versions. It's only a mid range card. Amd is starting the release of polaris in the mid range vs nvidia starting at the higher end. There are plenty of models above that, 480x, 490, 490x to compare to the 1080, 1080ti, or new titan and probably have another fury named card up higher.

Okay, so first off:

AMD is launching their mid range cards first, and Nvidia is launching their (higher) end cards first. AMD is definitely planning on releasing higher end cards, and Nvidia lower end cards. I would dare say, given the tiny size of the 1080, Nvidia probably plans to go even bigger soon, frankly.

Next, rumor says the mobile versions of Nvidias cards will be their desktop versions. Since Nvidias cards are power efficient, this makes sense. This could be true for AMD as well.

We simply don't actually know how they will stack up performance wise, AMD has not really let reviewers play with their RX 480 cards yet. Given the recent benchmarks of new games using directx 11 technologies, and the manufacturing technology jump, I actually expect both AMD and Nvidia to perform very similarly, probably with a cost advantage on amd.

In terms of launch dates, thats pretty up in the air. I expect something by August of this year, but I don't know what the market will look like. By the end of the year, we will definitely have new laptop cards from both manufacturers.

Lastly, your standards are very low. My 4 year old desktop with a gtx 680 can play most games at high settings just fine, and my lower end laptop ($1000) with a gtx 860m can still play most games at medium (though, I did have to push it to 720p at low to get consistent 60fps in dark souls 3). You can definitely buy a laptop right now that will give you medium settings or better for the next 4 years at the $2000 price point. That said, you should totally wait and get the new graphics cards because the improvement is huge, but don't worry about getting a machine to play your games at low to medium settings.

Completely wrong, they do make GPus but the downside is that amd mobile chips are not even comparable to nvidia they are hot running and lower performing.

They thats what i meant, they are no where near gaming performance although you can play games like league of legends and other low graphic intensive games.

What exactly is pascal/polaris, and how long do you think I'll have to wait for either one? I'm more of a team red guy, so I'd prefer polaris already, but I know Nvidia is great in the laptop market with their GPUs.

The polaris laptops would most likely be more budget friendly than Nvidias pascal laptops. So it depends on how much you are willing to pay for a laptop.

I'd be willing to pay almost up to $2000 if it'll let me play games on at least medium/low settings in 4 years.

Thank you! I'd pick this as the solution but I accidentally picked the other one.

Hopefully the higher end polaris cards will be sold in laptops before August?

Assuming Nvidia is able to cutdown pascal enough so that it doesn't burn a hole through the laptop. AMD's chips are much closer to being laptop ready. Nvidia has to release the 1060 and 1050 before it even thinks about putting it's higher end chips into laptops. There may be a laptop or two that just but a whole desktop chip in them but with pascal you would be able to game for 20 minutes tops and it would throttle.
