are headphone plugs waterproof?

over the course of one year, the plug on my audio technica athm50s have gotten very dirty. not the part that goes into the jack but the handle part. is it ok if i use a towel and hot water? or alcohol on it? will it kill the headphone?

it will be fine to use a towel and hot water on it just don't soak the area where the cable enters the plug.
