are older shows really in hdtv

I had directv hdnet last year and there were some older shows like square
pegs and wolf lake that were broadcasted on that channel. I also have the
cable companies hdtv and the even news and all programming on 2 channel
stated are all hdtv. I bought that very much. Can older shows be upgraded to
hdtv and how do I know if something like the local news or thoses older
shows like seinfel or the simpsons(older ones pre 94) are being transmitted
in hdtv? other then the screen switching back and forward between 16x9 and
4x3.

The most amazing old show I saw in HD was "Hogan's Hereos". Really looked
good.

If the show was produced originally on film, then it CAN be scanned at high
definition, and a new hd video master made. However, it ain't all that
cheap to have the HD master created, and few syndicators will pay the
price...especially since HD owners aren't all that plentiful yet.
Old shows in HD would be the exception...not likely.

That being said, anybody remember the old Superman shows from the 50"s?
The producer was smart enough to shoot them all in color, long before color
tv became the standard. He became extremely rich selling those shows all
over again when color took hold in the 60's!

Some one correct me if I am wrong.I have been told ANY TV show that was FILMED
can be uped to HD.I watch HOGANS heros and it sure looks good.

FILM is a of HIGHER resolution than HDTV.

really depends... while 35mm film SHOULD be much better than 1080, in
reality the quality of the exposure/developing, editing and perhaps
re-printing can take its toll. Additionally, there were some shows that were
filmed in 35mm but edited as video... these are toast.

The Paramount folks who were converting their TV and movie library stated at
the Digital Hollywood conference a few years ago that the final product of
an all film original is typically equivalent to 1080 but often not
remarkably better.

No, it's not cheap, but it's only a one time investment. They will have
no problem recouping their investment later.

All the popular old shows shot on films will be transferred to HD
eventually.

Recently, the INHD channels have been showing old Olymplic games in
HD. These shows are obviously transfered from film because some
materials were really old. One annoying observation is that in many
scenes, the heads of the athletes were not including in the shots.
The film were apparently not made in 16x9 ratio and they didn't bother
to do some vertical pan & scan during the transfer.

The P&S controversy has troubled us for years when widescreen movies
were remastered for 4x3 TV. Now, the same will troubled us for
decades to come when old 4x3 films are remastered for 16x9 TV. Same
problem, just different orientation.

In many PBS HD programs, they use a picture-in-picture technique to
handle low res footages. They will show some static background
pictures or footage in HD. Then they add a tiny window which shows
the old TV footage at the same resolution. The effect is very good
for big screen TV because you are not bothered by constantly changing
resolution from one scene to the next. The only trouble is the small
size for viewers watching small TV.

I for one think they should just transfer them in their original aspect
ratio and give us a 4:3 image with black side panels.

Some of the old shows shot on film are not exactly 4:3. As one can tell
from watching Hogan's Heros. And the HD transfer is not exactly 16:9
either. There is still a slim black panel on each sides.

HDnet, for one, has been actively creating HD copies of a number of
shows that they now air.
