Aspire one kav60 only works in safe mode

hi, my acer aspire one netbook runs on XP Home Edition svc pack 3, but it will not boot up correctly.

It gets to the black windows logo screen and just churns and churns going nowhere for 1/2 hour if I let it. I did system restore a couple of times to earlier and earlier dates, but that didn't seem to work either.

However today I started up in Safe Mode and it said my system was successfully restored to Dec. 8. I don't believe it really, but I will try. Ok so I did a restart from safe mode and got the black windows screen with the 3 scrolling blue dots and it just will not boot! Keeps churning. This is irritating!

Any ideas or suggestions to try?
