I need a new laptop (for college) that can also do pretty okish in gaming too. After hours of searching I am left with two choices :
Asus K55VM-SX114D, Intel® CoreTM i7-3610QM 2.30GHz, Ivy Bridge, 4GB, 750GB, nVidia GeForce GT 630M 2GB and
Acer Aspire V3-571G-73614G50Maii, Intel® CoreTM i7-3610QM 2.30GHz, Ivy Bridge, 4GB, 500GB, nVidia GeForce GT 640M 2GB.

As you can see they both have the same processor. ASUS has a 1600MHz RAM frequency while Acer has 1333MHz (not sure if that matters too much).
The important thing (for me) is that Acer has a better video card than ASUS, but then again, I've heard only bad things about Acer so I don't really know what to do. They both have the same price and I kind of need some opinions as soon as possible because I start college soon.

no real comparison. Acer makes fairly decent cheap products, with a price to match. ASUS on the other hand makes better grade products and pays more attention to QC, better customer support, etc.
I have owned products from both companies, and there is a place for both, but really they are on 2 different ends of the spectrum.

So bottom line you are leaning towards the ASUS one ? Will the lower video card (but higher RAM frequency) make any difference in gaming ?

The 640 is quite a bit faster than the 630 video card, the RAM speed will not make much difference. You should find an Asus model with a faster video card, even at the cost of a slower CPU, an i5 should be fine. i5 with a faster video card is better than an i7 with a slower card.
