asus windows 8.1

I have an Asus notebook pc. I downloaded windows 8.1 and it seemed fine until it wanted to do updates. Now it says " we couldn't complete the updates , undoing changes, don't turn off your computer" I can't get it to do anything how do I stop this cycle?

after booting up go to software distribution folder in win/sys32 , delete all the files and folders in software distribution.

change the settings in windows update to let me check what to download
