AT&T Doubling 3G Speeds; Stability Questionable

My home area AT&T doesn't even have 3G yet and despite the supposed availability in February this year, it's unlikely to happen anytime soon. So from that perspective make 3G 10x faster and it still won't make a difference to me. Grrrr.

Otherwise I can't complain much and the service isn't any different from Verizon to be honest ... both go flatline near my house.

Sprint, US Cellular, Alltel (now verizon) also use CDMA. If Apple wants to open up its possibilities, it might as well look into CDMA.

AT&T is the worst carrier ever. Bellsouth spent a ton of money making sure that cingular was a great network, renting towers and doing what they needed to do to make their customers happy. AT&T comes along and buys bellsouth and everything that was once great is now AWFUL! If I worked for AT&T I would quit just so my name wouldn't be tarnished! I couldn't make a single call without it dropping out. I still have a month left on my contract and I just went to verizon, I just couldn't deal with them anymore... AWFUL!

Its funny I only hear the bad things about AT&T, but I have never experienced it. I have an iPhone 3G and it works awsome. I don't get droped calls but what I do get is certain areas were 3G doesnt work but still old EDGE works.

I've never had good experiences with calls with any phone I've used. I've used many different models of phones from different manufacturers with different carriers. The technology in general sucks, 3G or no. I'm actually quite happy with my iPhone. It's doing as well as the others reception-wise, and better than any other I've used in terms of its capabilities.

I'm sorry, I don't really mean to be a troll, but I get really annoyed when people say things like:

"I couldn't make a single call without it dropping out. I still have a month left on my contract and I just went to verizon, I just couldn't deal with them anymore... AWFUL!"

"4 years with AT&T were awful. dropped calls galore. im happy with verizon."

Do you people really think that anyone is going to believe it was that bad? Every call was dropped? Really?? REALLY!!?? EVERY CARRIER has places that aren't covered so well. We ALL know this.

I have had at&t since back when it was AT&T, then Cingular, and now at&t. I have had some, very few, dropped calls. Not enough for me to really remember or care about. However, I do not enjoy calling many of my friends who have Sprint, or several family members that have Alltel. Those calls get dropped much more often. The calls I make to other at&t customers and the ones to Verizon customers will be just fine about 99.9% of the time. In my neck of the woods that's how it seems to work. Besides, at&t is the only service available with 3G. The carriers that use CDMA are not 3G. They say they are (some even say they are the first 4G), but they're not. Simple and minor upgraded compression techniques and software updates really don't mean you now magically have a 3G (or 4G) network. I really try and want to believe that people don't believe everything they see and hear on tv.

I'm not saying that at&t is the best. I'm not saying that the other carriers are bad. I'm saying that there is a lot of egg throwing going on and in the end we all wind up with it on our faces. So the next time you decide to post a bunch of unqualified, uneducated, exaggerated opinions, make sure you state then as such and not as facts. Or better yet, keep your unhelpful and obviously fictional ranting to yourself.

I live in the middle of WV near Charleston, and have AT&T. I rarely have problems with them and have great 3G service with my Motorola Q9H and my wife does well with her 3G iPhone. So far I've been happy with the service, with a very rare dropped call. I do bluetooth tethering with my phone and get descent speeds, but the bluetooth is my bottleneck, so the fastest speed I can get after tweaking Windows is about 1.2Mbps downstream and about 350kbps upstream.

AT&T did NOT buy Cingular. Cingular purchased AT&T for 30(+ -) Billion in CASH.

at&t current problem is they are growing too quickly for their current network. (my opinion) Thanks to the iPhone.

...how can a service provider grow 'too quickly' Are you meaning from the standpoint of upgrading their technology in existing areas/towers and not expanding coverage to new areas, or expanding coverage to new areas while not improving the technology in existing areas? Either way they are attempting to do both at the same time. Just because it's not working well in an area/none existent doesn't necessarily mean they are not trying/working in another area. Did Verizon roll out FIOS to everywhere people want? No, but they are trying. Has anyone tried using a Verizon outside of the US? Doesn't work. Europe among other areas have a higher penetration of GPRS,UMTS (Verizon uses CDMA as someone has pointed out). T-mobile and ATT can cross continents without communications problems (although you will get charged different rates).

"ThisIsMe", your comments about every carrier having places where there isn't very good coverage is helpful and adds to the discussion. It's important for everyone to understand there are a lot of conditions and variables that go into the quality of your cellular service where you live.

Of course, nerdrage against others who are clearly posting their opinions doesn't really help us much here.

I'd be happy if we could just get cell coverage in NM. 3g is just a pipe dream for us.

I have AT&T and less than a year after getting the iPhone 3g, they have added 3G where I live and even 30 miles south where I work. There service is pretty good.

Uhh, update for Mr. (thinks he knows it all) Sp0cK.

You got it only half right. BellSouth, (Cingular) did purchase AT&T wireless. Then, AT&T used the money from the sale of AT&T wireless, along with stock etc. to purchase Cingular's parent company, BellSouth about 18 months later. Now THAT was a great business move by AT&T.

Actually sbc (Cingular wireless) bought all of att (old ma bell hence the name American telephone and telegraph.) mobile phone service. before the purchase had even really finished they turned around and bought up all of att. they then chose to switch their name back to ATT due to the fact that sbc and Cingular where never very valuable for keeping customers (anything with the name bell in it is not trusted by older customers allot of why they made Cingular to distance them self’s from the name.) att as it is today is SBC with a shiny new but old name. Look at the other remaining bells they all ditched the name to Verizon, quest, Nortel.
I don't see how you people have this many problems with your cat service. I live 20 Ml west of downtown in St Louis ( a kind of big market) I work about 35 from down town I service sites about 100 from down town and 200 more from the next city with more than 200 pop. I call and visit at least 3 times a year a city in cal that won’t let att build anymore equipment. I drive or fly to Austen TX at least once a month. I do all of this while constantly talking on my iphone and my sprint work phone I do not go more than 20 min of a work day without getting a email text phone call on one or the other most of the time both. I maybe get 1 to 2 dropped calls a month 99% of the time one of us is going through a tunnel or there VoIP at home dies or its. Really if you have anything to do with the tech industry you are a retard if you expect anything near 99% reliability I don’t as far as I’m concerned everyone but Verizon is great at mobile and land line phone service. There internet on the other hand let’s not start that.
Most people compare there wireless phone service to radio in my experience (well the radio works like everywhere why can’t my phone) .I understand this there both wireless and most users are dumber then a post makes since when you look at it their way.
The point is its well point to point there always has to be a relative line between you and the service tower granted there is some extra elevation on your side but when you but a mountain or 100 cars between you and the tower it does not work right. Is telling your friend every detail about your date last night that damn important. I work with my phone and a extra 5 min to get to where I need to be to make a call send a email is not that big of a deal get over it.
