Per the Tom's Guide "Best Anti Virus for Mac 2015" I installed the free version of Avira. Each day I had problems going online using Chrome, safari and Mac Mail app on my new MacBook Pro. I looked for settings in the Avira program which would create this problem but found none. Upon uninstalling Avira my problem went away and everything went back to normal.
I would appreciate any comments on my problem. I really want protection for my laptop and Tom's review was glowing.

Reviews aren't the end all argument. I personally don't put much weight on website reviews as they have their own flaws. Webroot has good real customers experience feedback.

For free option there is Avast for Mac
