Back headphone jack causes high pitch whine, but front doesn't

For the longest time, my headphones have made a high pitched, whining sound while they're plugged in. But recently its become unbearable and I tried to find out what the problem was. I found out that the noise goes away when I plug my headphones into the front headphone jack instead of the back. Why does this sound only occur when it is plugged into the back? I've been told it probably is my motherboard. Do I need to buy a new one or can this be fixed somehow? Thanks.
