Hello all --

I recently bought an iPAQ 4155 from an online merchant and when I
click on the "About" icon in the Settings screen, it tells me that the
machine is running "Microsoft Pocket PC Version 4.20.0 (Build 13252)"

The website I bought it from advertised the product as running
"Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Premium."

Did I get the operating system I was promised?

Thanks for any advice. I'm new to Pocket PCs, so I appreciate your
help.

-Steve

You did NOT get what you were promised! The version you have is the direct
predecessor to the one you should have gotten. This happens quite often.
Of course, if you're happy with what you got, then why bitch about it? Just
because it's a fraction of a second slower, you're going to throw a fit?
"Oh boo hoo! I didn't get what I was supposed to get even though I don't
know what the hell I was supposed to get in the first place!"

How do you figure that? If he got one previous, you must think he should
have WinCE 5 which isn't out yet, and certainly wasn't for the 4155. The
next WM release would be WM2003 Second Edition, which wasn't, and isn't
available on the 4155.

The WinCE or PocketPC ver 4.2 is exactly what is on mine and refers to the
kernel OS on which the PPC UI is built. The WM2003 refers to the UI that is
laid on top of the OS, and Professional defines the suite of stuff that is
provided with that UI.

He got exactly what was advertised and what he should have gotten.

Ken, that would be one of the worst replies to a post I have seen in this
newsgroup.....ill-informed, arrogant and unhelpful

Thanks again for the info, all.

So putting aside Ken's confusingly mean-spirited response (not sure
where he got the impression that I was bitching, nor why he seems to
think that everyone should understand the nuances of kernel OS's and
PPC UI's before posting a pretty innocent question in the appropriate
newsgroup)...

....I'm still a bit confused. It sounds, from reading Sven's post,
that I *did* get the correct underlying OS, but that maybe I didn't
get the right UI and/or suite of other stuff that would come with the
WM2003 Premium (or Professional) UI. Or am I missing something?

Thanks again, and to those celebrating Thanksgiving, Happy Holiday!

-Steve

....but, we all (including me) have our bad days and just have to
remember that there's a learning process in forum help just like
everything else.

....now, if we could only install a "safety latch" on the "send" button ;-)

No, no, you got what was intended and advertised. There is a bit of
difference in the applications included in the professional and premium
suites. The 2215 comes with the more complete one in ROM. So few folks even
know that there is a difference, it takes some digging to find out what the
difference is. The smaller suite was more prevalent early on when some
manufacturers did not install all the usual apps into ROM to use a smaller
ROM and save cost.
