If you don't like something, why don't you just don't go see the thing??? All the discussions should stop there. Some years ago there was an artist, who made a big fucking turd in bronze and show it as art. Well this is not my kind of art, so I did not go where it was shown, and that's it... Most of people don't give a shit about you prophet and those facebook groups, so please stop whining. Nothing to see, move along...

[citation][nom]ElysianMerc[/nom]Threatening people's lives is in no way a proper response to a sacrilegious comment.[/citation]

While I mostly disagree with the opinion of eklipz330, I don't see anything remotely resembling a threat to other people's lives, I don't see how is response was inappropriate and why so many people are downrating it. Aren't thumbs down intended for inappropriate comments rather than disapproval of the writer's opinion? Perhaps his comment is inappropriate for some reason I am overlooking.

I would personally like to see these facebook groups be religion-nonspecific, or even better, just insult all major religions. Draw Mohammad, burn a Bible, pray to a 'false idol', etc. All to just show how stupid these religions are. I'm all about allowing other people to do there own thing, but don't infringe my freedoms. Its one thing if I use 'hate speech' which would require speaking out against a group of people, its another to just bash a religion in general. I think Muslims, Christians, etc are awesome; I think their religion and all other religions are stupid. Why does religion always get special protections?

Religion is the root of all evil.

You do not need religion to have morals and religious beliefs should be a private thing not forced upon society in general. People should be free to practice their religion but equally others should be free from have to bend their own lifestyle to accommodate others religion.

[citation][nom]showape[/nom]Yeah? Doesn't seem to me that way buddy. I'm a Bangladeshi in Bangladesh right now and I'm forced to hide my IP to visit facebook. Btw I'm also a Muslim. Mocking Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh)is something we consider worse than burning down a Mosque. Blocking fb was a necessary move in that regard. Also, I agree with 'Anonymous'about self defence being the only violence allowed in Islam. Terrorists are just terrorists, not 'Muslim' terrorists, as they're far from the main goal of Islam, or any religion for that matter - peace.[/citation]
Islam teaches that all must either be converted or killed. If a Muslim doesn't believe in the killing part, then they might as well ditch the religion because they've invented their own doctrine. To me, this is looking a lot like you're just picking and choosing random things to believe, and doesn't make anyone want bend over backwards to please you.

A good muslum who follows the koran is a extremist. A moderate muslum is one who doesn't believe the koran completely.

You can say the exact same thing about Christianity. Modern 'moderate' interpretations are the only reason that (most) Christians aren't killing people left and right.

I read here the ban was lifted and that it was still in effect but, wether people can see FB or not in Bangladesh... the pictures, depictions, and representations still exist and always will for that matter so moderates or extremists of any religion can see them or not. Fanatics of any religion should be given proper blinders if this is all it takes to "set your people off". I'm not just referring to muslims here either. The RAB banning FB connections has the same affect as handing out blindfolds or, as in catholicism, transferring a priest.

Why this article is on Tom's ..... given the last week of news and search topics.... the words muslims/FB/Oil spill/ and lady gaga probably top the most searched words at the moment and something needs to keep the lights on!

[citation][nom]zmbcat[/nom]Sorry but no matter how you look at it, taking such religious "blasthemies" so seriously just shows how "lacking" the islamic culture has become. Sure, west has its own social problems, but the lack of interest/respect for christianity came from scientific progress and development of social level, human rights etc.The people doing this arent just "trolling", they want to show that it isnt exactly "right" for such a huge number of people to take their religion above all else - they want arabs to start looking at life through modern perspective.So banning of facebook basically says "we dont want to change, we want to keep our medieval traditions and fuck off rest of the world".I guess this isnt the right forum for this though[/citation]

Yes, of course. Because, as you say, facebook promotes democracy. In our naive brains, we assume that protecting free speech must come at all costs, even if it means that facebook is paid by advertisers to lower its privacy controls so that companies can see our personal information by simply searching for us on google or on facebook. Hmmm, so much for democracy.

Or, do you ignore the fact that people waste countless hours rearranging their applications, sending mindless texts, and potentially destroying their future job opportunities by posting lewd pictures on it?

Facebook has committed privacy violations and contributes to making Americans even more mindless than our television and alacarte news do.

Don't get me wrong, though. I do understand the other side of the argument. If it had stronger privacy controls, if people didn't waste so much time on it, and if people were more politically active on it, it could be a positive force for democracy. At it's current stage, I just don't see facebook as the same simple daily log of correspondences that it used to be.

I guess it was too much to hope the topic would end at my last post. The hollow cans, they have made a comeback. Regardless, I will try to inform those who are misinformed (don't really blame you are there is a lot of misinformation floating around) and of the opinion that there are more things in this world than are contained in their philosophy. This might be a long one.

Stating with Anomalyx. Deep breath. That sir is a false statement. I'm not sure where it came from but it seems a minority have embraced it with fervor. The truth is contrary to your statement. Google Al-Kafiroon for more info.

ProDigit80, hardly. Mmm..random rage, yummy.

rtfm, I agree with your second paragraph to some extent. Greed, ignorance and fear are my votes for "root of all evil" category. Religion is responsible for the morals and laws we ascribe to, regardless of whether or not you want to accept that. Google History of the world for more info. ;)

gm0n3y. The problem with insulting everyone everywhere is that sooner or later someone is going to get upset. You wouldn't walk into the Bronx and start calling every black person you see a ni*ger and expect to come out unscathed, would you? Yes, in an ideal world we would all sit down for tea and have a nice chat and talk about the psychosocial and physiological implication of pushing someone's buttons. Unfortunately, this is not an ideal world. Pushing buttons can lead to unwanted consequences.

w1zz4, unfortunately its not always that simple. If someone were to spread defamitory images of you and your family around the world I'm sure you'd be a little upset. Sure you might shrug it off and say, "i'm pretty fugly anyway, and my mom is hot" but it would still affect you. So you shrug and wait till it goes away. But whoever is doing it doesn't stop. Not because they just randomly found illicit photos of you but because they are making a concerted effort to defame, insult and delegitimize you and show no sign of stopping. Sure freedom of speech is great, and if you don't want to see something you can just ignore it. What happens when it’s in your face every day?

flaminggerbil, the modern world? Pfft, I'd rather be in Future world. You treat "islam" as though it is a person where it is not. How is it that your neighbor can have a different point of view from you but one muslim cannot be different from the next? Please try not to generalize a very complex concept as it simply leads to misunderstanding. Perhaps you meant to say the Middle East, which has a mixture of different cultures, religions, and races?

duncanidaho, you do realize the only reason we still have any record of Greek philosophy and literature is because of Muslim students, don't you? I do agree that there are those who have taken Islam and twisted it for political means. As happens everywhere, unfortunately, people are people no matter where you go.

Princeofdreams, intolerance preaching tolerance? The "west" as you put it is responsible for the vast majority of those corrupt "muslim" leaders. Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Afghanistan. How do you think those murderers and frauds got into power? It wasn’t by any fair election I assure you. Where do they buy the arms that oppress their people? Ever wonder why exactly the Saudi's regularly visit the Bush's? They have no interest in Islam nor peace, inly with money. Speak with anyone on the streets of those countries and you'll realize if it weren't for the "west" those dictators would have been removed a long time ago.

Getting tired/bored so I'll close with this. I think I've covered most of it, if not in the best possible way.

In any part of the world you will find people that worry about petty things, people that seek ideals, and people that just don't give a rattus asinus. Making generalizations about others we know little about leads to misunderstanding, fear and eventually hate and it works both ways. So guard yourself against ignorance by thinking twice and getting as much information, from as many different sources, as you can.

"After Pakistan, democracy is now dead in Bangladesh as well. I guess for all those "moderate Muslims" that are supposedly out there it seems like there aren't a lot of them in positions of power."

Laws and values didn't come from religion, religions came by later - much later, and incorporated in more of the common sense ones. It's not like everyone went around murdering everyone before "Thou shalt not kill" was conjured up. Religions try to hijack morality and law just like political parties try to hijack the flag and patriotism.

The solution is that I'm going to say or draw whatever I want, whenever I want, because I am free to do so. If someone is currently suffering from a medieval mind-virus and takes offence, thats fine with me. Be offended - theres no law against it. For thousands of years people have been murdered due to belief systems, a little mockery to remind people just how ignorant and backwards some beliefs are is a good thing and can serve to highlight why people less and less people are subscribing to these silly notions on a daily basis.

If organized religion had demonstrated some type of secular respect and kept to themselves - no one would care what crazy things people believe. Now they want the rest of us to offer up tolerance and respect and all the things they never practiced.

I've heard every limp wristed deist argument, every demand that I alter my behavior because of what is written in an ancient work of fiction, every plea to wishful child-thinking imaginable - theres just not enough care left in me to coddle people who aren't intellectually independent enough to just live a decent life and try to enjoy it while it lasts without concocting some bizarre sub-plot to spare themselves the mental effort of a little personal philosophical reflection and come to their own conclusions without having it all handed to them in a tidy little box.

If you disagree, fine. Because if so, I am also disagreeing with you, fine. The problems start when people can't simply leave it there. The honor killing, terrorizing, burning at the stake, blocking of websites, etc. - that is what creates the derision and mockery. No big surprise that in nearly all cases, violence erupts from one side and not the other.

I do agree however that in the future this will be less of an issue, and I look forward too it. I find it sad that we can fly to the moon, create such beautiful arts and wonders, and yet so many people are left in the dark over matters that were solved by some many thousands of years ago. It's like meeting people who still think the world is flat - but I'm hopeful for the future.

Those students who were arrested certainly have to fear for their lives as torture and extrajudicial executions are common in Bangladesh. It's another Iran in the making.

Rawrnomnom, when I was younger I was spoon feed that ”golden age of Islam” crap when Moslems, Jews and Christians held hands and sang kumbaya and invented algebra. Sorry but after the conquest of Egypt in 639 AD papyrus/paper disappeared from Europe. If that hadn’t happened we wouldn’t have to be grateful for the tiny scraps recovered from Arabs. How much will we lose if history repeats itself and Osama gets his hands on an EMP device?

I did say after that comment that I'm against bashing groups of people, but am ok with bashing religions. Bashing ideas = ok, bashing people = bad. Also, this has nothing to do with my expectation of how others will react. I'm sure that if I went into that crazy southern baptist church (the one everyone makes fun of on the internet) and told them Jesus raped my dog, they'd probably injure me. People need to be less sensitive. Everyone should spend a few hours on 4chan and really get desensitized. They're just words / images people, get over it.

Hey. I'm just really curious about the whole notion of homosexuality being "okay" in different religions (e.g. Christianity and Islam were mentioned in some earlier comments). Can someone please provide me links to your references for these claims? I'm not saying you're right or wrong, I'm just truly curious because this is the first time I've ever come across this notion in my entire life, and it's interesting.

Here's my two cents just based on the general knowledge I possess:

What is the definition of "homosexuality?"

I think homosexuality is when two people of the same gender engage in sexual activity (e.g. kissing, oral/anal sex, etc).

So based on MY definition, the earlier comments saying "it's ok to be homosexual in Christianity/Islam, but homosexual intercourse [I'm assuming "intercourse" here is representing any/all sexual activity] is not allowed" is countered. One cannot be a "homosexual" unless he engages in some sort of sexual activity. To me, a "homosexual" who is not engaging in homosexual sex is just...a homo sapien. :p

Also, I'm pretty sure sodomy of any form (either between man-man or even man-woman) is not allowed in both Christianity and Islam.

~~~~~~~~~~~~``
Question: If two "so-called homosexual men" are really close to each other, but they don't engage in any form of sex whatsoever, aren't they just "best buddies??" :p Next time you tell your wife/girlfriend that you're gonna go "hang out with the guys", you might wanna clarify what you mean!! xD lolz
Honestly sometimes I wish all Muslims would go back into their own shell. They invite open warfare with their actions and then attack the West from all angles for inciting hatred against the Muslims.
Muslims of the 13th Century were much, much better. They pioneered many areas of science and contributed greatly to society. It's as if Islam simply degenerates with age.
