I have an asus optical drive in my pc that i just recently built. I can not play any blu ray movies because I dont have a software to play them with. Is it good to pay for the software or are there free ones that are just as good?

There are no free ones , they have to be licensed by OneBlue.

Corel Windvd Pro is a great one.

You should pay for the software as there is no perfect free tools in the market now.
For VLC, it can only deal with some old discs after the necessary settings(install AACS keys)
