Best Hookup for HDMI

If your tv is connected to a home theater system, would it make sense to
connect HDMI from the cable box to the tv? I would assume that you would
connect just a video cable from the cable box to the tv and a separate
digital audio cable (optical or coaxial) from the cable box to the home
theater receiver. Thoughts?

Then what is the big fuss about HDMI. TVs don't play 5.1 audio, so why do
you need HDMI?

1. Some TVs will play stereo from the HDMI audio connection.
2. Some receivers will do HDMI switching as well as audio and this
would provide single cable input to them.

Yes.

Multiple HDMI inputs selectable to one or more HDMI outputs.

Because it's as good as DVI and smaller and can negate the use of separate
audio cables.

Thats exactly how I'm set up. (Well, cable STB's DVI to HDTV's HDMI.)
Sound is coming the cable STB's fiber out to a DD/DTS receiver.

Didn't notice a "major difference" in PQ between using DVI-HDMI over
component cables, but it did free up a component set of inputs.
One simple DVI-HDMI cable also reduced some of the spaghetti behind
everything.

Picked up the DVI(D)-HDMI cable for only $8.50 from http/www.monoprice.com

No need for a $100 cable. Its digital!

I wouldn't mind getting audio to my HDTV over HDMI. My HDTV is capable of
putting it out as stereo through it's speakers. True, 90 percent of the
time, the TV's speakers are turned down all the way as I pull audio through
the DD/DTS receiver, but sometimes at zero-dark-thirty, I keep the DD/DTS
off and just play the audio through the TV. If my cable STB had HDMI
instead of DVI, I could discard the stereo RCA audio cables currently
connected.
