Creative labs will probably have a step above all others because their mp3 players basically have audigy sound cards. Several of my friends have creative labs mp3 players and I have yet to hear one that sounds better.

The best sounding portable music players are made by Cowon. Depends on your prefered file format, of course, though. Cowon PMPs can work with all of them ranging from MP3 to FLAC to WAV. So, if you need a portable music player to fit your pocket, Cowons are the best in terms of SQ, strictly speaking. But, if you intend to listen to music mostly at home, just taking it from one room to another, consider buying a paltop and an external DAP.

One thing you have to consider when listening to Friend's zen micro is you have to compare an apple to an apple.

* Need to have the same headphones on each player to compare.

* Preferably the same audio file as well.

You can save songs in different formats / saved different quality levels / etc. A pair of headphones can make a world of difference in sound quality too.

What a thread resurrection....

FWIW, the Cowon PMPs are the best, although the Zune HD isn't bad (I have one and love it).

My Samsung Trills sounds pretty f'n sweet, and it receives calls.. :)

Crisp highes, not overly powerful bass but still thumps when it needs.

Cowon S9 remains dominant. The rest of Cowon too. I've had personal experience with the Zune HD, sound is crisp on my JVCs... You can also buy a personal amp and have noticably better sound.

Cowons sound the best, period. They are usually cheaper than IPODs too.

The only downside to their S9 is that it is only 32GB and the ipod touch is 64GB.

I'm waiting on Cowons next S9 pmp with more memory before I invest in a new one, cause 32GB gets eaten fast by FLAC music...
