c drive space

a year ago I bought one of those Windows 10 tablets Windows took up most of the space on the drive and if you added any program it just was to much for the C drive to hold. I thought I could use my 64gb usb stick but it only takes media stuff so the thing was useless
A few days ago I bought a mini computer with a 32gb EMMC drive, windows takes up 18gb and so I have about 10gb space left. Again I find it will not let me install a program on an external drive. Am I doing something wrong, what is the use of a system that fills it's main drive?
The other thing is they sell these and say Windows 10 pre-installed, but it is not activated and they do not give you a product key to activate windows. It has windows but, well just not a genuine copy like you might expect.
