"Cannot format memory card" error

I was shooting bridals with my Nikon D5000 (yes, dinosaur, i know) and all of a sudden it stopped letting me shoot and brought Up an error that read "cannot format memory card." I wasnt trying to format the memory card. I was just shooting then it would randomly pop up. It would make my whole production stop and wait while i turned my camera off then back on to try to make it go away. Sometimes when i turned it on it would be gone and sometimes it wouldnt. Im scared its going to erase all of my images in the middle of a shoot now. I just need to know if this is fixable or if i have to retire this camera. Thoughts?

Try another memory card and see if the same thing happens. If it does, the camera is probably starting to go out on you. If there are no problems with the other memory card, the previous mem card is probably defective.
