Can't get pictures to show up on computer from iphone

My iPhone wasn't showing up under my computer. After reading and trying for 3 hours I finally got some good advice. Simply took a picture and it finally showed up! All I want to do is transfer my photos from my phone to the external hard drive. But the picture I just took is the only one showing up. How do I access the others? I'm beyond confused and frustrated. I did this back in April no problem

When you start iTunes, it does not show you the pictures? Did you maybe just copy them to the computer and then selected to delete them from the phone?
