Can't multitask on acer aspire e15

I've always played games on my laptop yet recently it has started to have issues when I am playing a game and using voicechat simultaneously. If I am in a discord call or using steam party chat while playing a game I will get massive frame drops as well as constant stuttering. i never used to have problems like this but now it has gotten to the point where I can't talk with my friends and play at the same time. Is there anything I can do to fix this or is it just a product of an aging laptop?

Steam has recently dropped a big UI update for friends list and steam overlay. If you have not updated yet, make sure to do so. If you have, the update could have caused some glitch or bug. Have you tried reinstalling steam?

Yea I have both updated and reinstalled like you recommended and it still has the same effect on my game as discord: A drop in roughly 40 frames as well as a constant stutter while playing
