cant watch movies

I brought a external hard drive a friend downloaded movies on to it I insert into USB port in my TV and it comes up UNSUPPORTED USB What does this mean. I brought this as my hubby is bed bound and thought it would be good , but cant use after spending money buying it

if these are theatrical releases and not home made movies this is piracy and is against the eula of this forum.
