[citation][nom]alidan[/nom]this is costing sony 1.8-2.8 billion dollars and credibility they will ever get back[/citation]

They will get their credibility back since fanbois usually are in total denial and the rest have the memory of a horse! When that happens (10 years maby?) - Sony will likely get to arrogant again and provokes another round of "we are sorry we didn't give a crap about your security and have already managed to forget what happened before and fired the extra network security staff to increase bonuses" and the circle repeats....

[citation][nom]Bored2Day[/nom]This article is one way of perceiving it. Or the other is that messing with hackers will result in attacks such as this. And if you plan on doing that you should have the best security available. Sony didnt bother to do this when they went after hackers knowing that there would be a high probability of a counter attack. ..[/citation]

Isn't this a bit like suggesting that women who go out unarmed are to blame for being raped? They should have taken better precautions, so it's their fault?

The sooner the hackers are found and prosecucted, the better for all PSN users.

Not defending the hackers, just giving a different comparison.
Sony is the big protector of the little users, going around in a leisure car in a conflict zone. It is of course the hackers' fault it got attacked, but Sony looses credibility as big protector in the war zone because using leisure car instead of a tank.
A tank would be more expensive and slower, more trouble for the little users to get in, but safer.

while i most definitely agree that sony should definitely have had higher security standards in place to deal with such attacks, it is very closed minded lay the blame soley on them.

when have people gotten so naive to think that just because you are dealing with a large corporation that you are safe? any time you put personal or credit card information online, especially if you have it saved to your account, there is a risk of such data being stolen.

also keep in mind that the group that actually attacked sony has the larger slice of blame. if they truley wanted to hurt sony then there are other ways to go about it. instead they not only shut down the network but accessed personal information on customers which proves that punishing sony was not their only intent. a rather low and vile act if you ask me. sony is more of a victim in this then the agressor.

if you think they deserved it because they went after the kid who tapped into his ps3, think about it for a moment. instead of releasing said information all over the internet ensuring every single user could accomplish this they instead attack in a way that yes does tarnish sonys reputation a little but ultimately hurts consumers much more.

as for capcom: stop crying about hypothetical money loss. just because of an event like this doesn't mean people will stop buying games. perhaps the real reason is because there are better games available in the genere. i've played the demos.. flashy..rediculous..broken games. release a good product and maybe i'd buy something.

I find it really hard to feel sorry for Capcom. This is a company that has crapped on their fans for years.
1) Selling the same game, but with extras that could have all been done with the games first release (i.e. Street Fighter series).
2) Selling dlc that just unlocked content already on the game disc.
3) Selling a game on PSN that needed a constant online connection, yet this little fact was never mentioned anywhere until it was discoverd by customers. And then neither Sony or Capcam would give refunds (Final Fight).

These guys can basically rot in hell.

it makes me want to find a total or eventually a final total of how much money sony lost because of this downtime from PSN alone

Although it's possible people would breach capcom, capcom is much more appreciated by people.
Chances are smaller some hacker wants to sabotage capcom than sony!

It's users and third party companies should not do business with a company that doesn't know how to keep it's network safe. Users have an excuse, they aren't professionals in this fields but third party companies should be more careful when partnering with other companies. The full fault falls on sony for going the cheap way, always.

This reminds me of Facebook and its privacy breech towards 3rd parties, who didn't complain when they got more personal info then they bargained for, but would scream out loud if something happened to Facebook and they would start loosing money because of it.

[citation][nom]Jugaholic[/nom]what if there was no hacker, and this is an elaborate hoax by Sony to get 70 million users on the paid service. Even if half stay and purchase yearly accounts, they could net 200 million in user fees in just this year. Not to mention the potential for future years growth.[/citation]

ok sure and george w bush planned those planes to crash into the towers on 9/11

yellow light of death anyone? xbox live at this point is the safer infrastructure. i work in retail. xbox provides better warranty service(no receipt needed for warranty, sony requires receipt and box), better customer service(just call and see), and they didnt give all your personal information to 13 year olds. this is known public fact. sony cares not about customers, just their bottom line.

if sony would just come out and admit their mistake prosecuting the homebrewers (not for pirating) with all the weight of the law, and let ppl use unix on the systems im sure the attacks would stop :3

If you want to use the rape analogy.

Its like the town whore one day closing up show (removing linux support), then the next day wearing a shirt that sais "Unrape-able" (you can't hack us, we removed linux!), then trash talking her previous customers (scare tactic lawsuit vs geo). Then a week later her old pimp rapes her, puts her ass in the hospital and cuts her face.

between share holder and stock, and the make good programs, you are probably looking at a 5-10 billion cost. the 1.8-2.8 is souly based on their make good programs, cost for mmos being free for 1 month + 1 day for every day its down.

im guessing the stock is more or less a short term block, due to its ability to go up and down on good and bad news, and the program for a free year of id theft protection, im guessing that that normaly costs 100$ a person for a years protection, but the possibility of getting 100 million coustomers, they got a massive discount, probably 20$ A head, up to 50, and assumeing that only 20% take the offer.

in the long run sony is ok, but they set the bar for what the minimum to do in a leak,
