change resolution of external monitor?

i just purchased a monitor for my laptop because i wanted a bigger screen but my laptops top resolution is only 1366x 768 and the monitor is 1920x1080 is it possible to make them compatible?

The highest resolution for the external monitor is determined by the GPU for the laptop, not the internal display resolution. Make sure to have it set to "Extended Mode," and not "Clone Mode." You will then have to go into your display software, and adjust the resolution- if it can go that high.
