I've done some research and it looks like the hd558, ad700x, and the dt990 are all good headphones in this price range. These will be used mostly for gaming so I am wondering if there is a noticeable difference between them in sound or comfort, or if any will suit my needs and should just go for the best deal. Thanks in advance for any replies.

if you are considering the hd558 it would be a very worthwhile jump to go to the hd598 at $30 more than your budget. they are very highly respected and have a huge soundstage. it doesnt have much bass presence though but typically enough for gaming if you arent a basshead.

the hd558 however isnt a bad choice but its not going to be on the same level as the 598. the bass is a bit more punchy than the 598 but it doesnt quite have the clarity of sound.

the ad700x by audiotechnica is also great and has a wide soundstage and mid/high focused sound. again, it doesnt have much bass (as in almost none).

the dt990 tends towards mid/highs as well but does have fair bass on some of the models although nothing like some of the monster closed...
Oh my heavens, did you get an answer from the wrong person (me). Headphone freak here.

The best detail I have ever come across is from the following two. Both are studio monitors. Be warned; I like Baroque music and couldn't care less about booming bass.
AKG K701 (well, the 702 has replaced them since then). They list way over $150, but I bought them for around that.

the dt990 tends towards mid/highs as well but does have fair bass on some of the models although nothing like some of the monster closed headphones have. generally beyers are comfortable as well. the dt880 should also be in your lineup... see this review for comparison http://www.head-fi.org/t/526839/dt880-vs-dt990-comparison-review

in general.... most open headphones tend towards bass light. if you want any sort of serious bass you need closed cans in that price range.
