I'm trying to watch a 1080p movie that I saved on my laptop, but there are isues with the video. The first portion is animated, and that plays fine, but as soon as the live-action part starts, the video lags, gets all pixelly, and the colors are distorted. No issues with the audio at any point. I tried watching a 1080p YouTube video and that also played without issue, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

I'm using VLC 2.2.2 and here are the details about my laptop:

Laptop: ASUS Q400A-BHI7N03
Intel Core i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20GHz
Intel HD Graphics 4000
8.00 GB Ram
OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
750 GB HDD

I checked the graphics driver and it appears to be updated. Could this be a problem with VLC?

Solution
Well being an MKV file could be the problem. You may want to try converting it to another format and see if that resolves it. I like "Format Factory" but there are many programs out there for conversion.

Also, depending on how it was created, it may not have been done well. If this is the case, you may need to open up the file in a program that will allow you to do some editing to resolve/fix the issue.

I tried converting the file to mp4 and it worked! The video no longer distorts. The subtitles stopped showing up though, so I'll need to figure that part out. Thank you!

I ended up extracting the subtitle file from the MKV and pairing it with the converted video file, which seems to be working well!
