features of the V600 (ie. bluetooth, quad-band, etc...not necessarily a
camera) with EDGE??

Currently I am using a Nokia 6230b prototype. This phone has Edge and
Cingular plans to sell this phone as soon as its released. However don't
confuse the 6230b with the 6230. The 6230 will work on T-mobile's and
At&t's network, but its a 900/1800/1900 phone. The 6230b is a
850/1800/1900 phone. You MUST have 850 for Cingular's Edge network.
Other than that,I don't know of any other phones that support EDGE *AND*
have 850 installed. There may be others I don't know about. There are
however several 900/1800/1900 phones that support EDGE, but again they
will not work on Cingular in most places. I will say that here in D/FW
is an area that Cingular claims Edge isn't up yet,however I'm using EDGE
and I'm seeing speeds between 70-130kps.

My advise would be to stay where you are. Until you can confirm that GSM
is functional where you want to go, stay on the GAIT plan. Here in the
D/FW area, once a customer leaves a GAIT plan they can't get back on it,
and they are stuck with GSM only. However thats not too much of a
problem here in Texas. Cingular is trying to get all customers off of
TDMA and over to GSM.

If you are using the EDGE connection to connect your laptop, try increasing
the Windows RWIN (TCP Receive Window Size) global registry setting for dial
up networking to 53248 (this value is being tossed around internally at CW).
Increasing RWIN will overcome some latency issues and throughput will likely
increase as well.

Why do you say that? EDGE can be on either the 800 or the 1900MHz systems.

Well, the Nokia 6200, the Nokia 6820 (USA Version), the Motorola V600, the
Motorola V400...... Well, you get the idea. There are a lot of them that are
800/1900 and EDGE compatible.

I think you're mistaken in regard to the V400 and V600. I have the V600 and
it is my understanding that these Vxxx series phones support GPRS but NOT
EDGE...Anyone have documentation otherwise?? I know there's been quite a
bit of discussion on this forum regarding what many consider the
"obsolescence" of the V600 due to it's omission of this feature.

BTW, the Vxxx series phones are quad-band and do support the 850MHz band.

When I first read your message I thought this modification would at best
give me a 20% increase in speed. I really wasn't expecting all that much
difference. However, after I made the change I nearly fell out of my
chair. As I said before, I was seeing an average speed of 80kbps. Well
now after the change, I am seeing an average speed of 200kbps with peeks
as high and 300kbps. When I first saw the results my first words where
something like "holy c***!!!". I still can't believe I seeing these
speeds. You can view a screen snapshot of the test at
http://www.wo5m.net/home_test.jpg. The strange part is I thought 130kbps
was the theoretical max for EDGE.

Anyone have any idea what the optimal RWIN is for GPRS? I get decent
connection speed, but get around 2 sec latency.

Take a quick look at http://www.phonescoop.com. It says -

Modes GSM 800 / GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900

Although you are mis-naming the frequency band, it looks like it covers all 4
bands that are available worldwide - 800/1900 here in the states and 900/1800
in the rest of the world.

800 = 850 - someone just decided somewhere along the way to confuse people and
call 800 850.

But not particularrly caring one way or the other for Motorola, I don't keep up

From what I've heard through the grapevine (from well-connected
friends) ----- most current Motorola GSM/GPRS phones are slated to be
moth-balled this fall with new versions coming out with EDGE and better
cameras. They are hearing September...

Theoretical max for EDGE is 473.6 kbps. This is not a real world value at
this time. A GSM radio has eight TDMA timeslots. Each timeslot could provide
a 59.2 kbps EDGE data pipe under optimal radio link conditions. However,
EDGE terminal devices (handsets, etc.) are now only designed to use 3-4
timeslots (downlink). For example, a Sony Ericsson GC82 PCMCIA EDGE card is
designed to use 4 timeslots in the downlink (base to mobile) and one
timeslot in the uplink (mobile to base). Best case downlink throughput for
the GC82 would be 236.8 kbps.

53248 is an appropriate value for that kind of latency with 500 Kbps speed,
and is thus excessive for much slower EDGE, although probably not harmful.
The standard RWIN of 16K bytes in Windows Me/2000/XP is actually sufficient.
Increased RWIN is really only needed for Windows 95/98/NT, which are 8K bytes
by default.

53248 (which is actually based on a broadband Urban Myth) is only needed for
that kind of latency with 500 Kbps speed, and is thus excessive for much
slower EDGE, although probably not harmful. The standard RWIN of 16384 bytes
in Windows Me/2000/XP is actually sufficient for EDGE -- increased RWIN is
really only needed for Windows 95/98/NT, which are 8192 bytes by default. For
UMTS (now deployed in 4 cities by ATTWS), the appropriate value is 32768
bytes, needed in all versions of Windows.
