cld-3070 tray won't open!!

My Pioneer CLD-3070 finally broke. The tray has been making noise since
it was given to me six years ago and now it won't open at all. I have
collected an extensive amount of laserdiscs and I need a replacement. I
was looking for recommendations, or if it is possible to fix it. I don't
need ac-3 but want the optical, s-video and A-B auto play. Should I
replace it with the same? Or is there a better standard player I should
go with, like the cld-d704?

Since you don't need an AC-3 RF output, look for a CLD-D703. It will have a
sharper picture if you have a good mastered LD.

I also have a 3070. The front door/panel that folds down some times sticks
and needs a little help. Any thoughts on how to fix it?

I have the top cover and front face off of mine. It looks like there is
a small gear on the left side (while facing the player) that drives the
door to open. I really can't tell how it functions because my tray won't
come out at all. I think I'm just going to replace it. Fixing it seems
more trouble than it's worth.

You need to clean the old grease out and apply new grease, you actually have
to take out the tray and then you have to remove the gears that push the
tray out. You have to clean off the old grease including the hole and pins
the gear goes on. In doing this you have to know the position of the gears
for correct timing or it will not work when you reassemble. You may also
have to remove the two blocks, one on each side that move the tray and clamp
up and down and clean and relubricate.

This is a big job and takes time. I've done it and it's not my favorite
job. Starting with the CLD-DX03 series Pioneer made removing the tray very
easy.

I got the tray to open and close now. I had a hard time getting the tray
in the correct position so it would open and close correctly. I put it
all back together and tested it. Now there is a very noisy picture and
terrible sound, if no sound at all. would the tray position have
anything to do with this? I have a feeling the laser is now out of
alignment. I was careful to stay away from bumping or messing with
it. If it does need professional repair should I just scrap it and buy a
better one, or still fix this one?

I'll bet your tilt motor is unplugged now. Open the drawer and verify you
have every connected still and nothing accidentally got unplugged.

The tray on my CLD-D701 sticks similar to this 3070 problem. It always
opens up after it struggles for a while, but it would be nice not to
have to wait 30 seconds while pressing the power on/off and eject
buttons until it opens up. Then it opens and closes fine each time the
rest of that day.

Is the fix simply replacing old dried out grease with new grease?
Hopefully the tray doesn't have to be removed like the 3070. I'm not
sure which part of the tray path is sticking or where to put the
grease (assuming I have any). Does the grease I should use have an
official name?
