composit ---> DVI/VGA for ps2

so i wish to use my dvi/vga monitor with my old ps2. now i've found a few things that might work

now one is a 11bucks simple cable
the other is a 75 bucks converter thingy.

i want to know if the simple cable is enough, and why is the converter thing so much more expensive (and what extra things does it do comparing to the cable).

You need one of these cables (PS3 to VGA):

I know it says PS3, but the system av cables are the same on both PS2 and PS3.

Also you have to change the video output settings to component from the default composite otherwise you will get no video output.
