Computer slow before boot

I have Acer Travel Mate 244, and it is slow even before boot up, and when it boots up, its slow, ive had free virus checkers on it, just got some more ram, 2 gig, where as it came with 512 which it should have more for xp sp3, but was ok when I bought it second hand

Try using disc cleanup and removing your temp files, recycle bin, etc. (don't compress files!).
