If you are working in an office where a full-fledged network infrastructure has been established by any network administrator, or if you’re working at home where any of your intelligent siblings or parents have configured some proxy settings, you might find it a challenging task to connect to the Internet if you’re not aware about what the proxy is all about and how to configure it in Mozilla Firefox to get the things up and running.
This section briefly, but clearly, explains how you can configure your Mozilla Firefox to use the proxy settings so that your requests for the websites can be forwarded to the Internet using the saved proxy configuration.
Brief Information about Proxy
A proxy server is an intermediary computer or software application that is placed between the Internet and your internal network infrastructure (which can be a single computer or a LAN switch). Many organizations prefer using the proxy servers in order to expedite the name resolution process (in layman’s language to speed up the Internet when it comes to opening the websites). Also, with the help of proxy servers, smart administrators can restrict the users from accessing unwanted and unproductive websites. If such proxy applications are used within home networks, they can be used to prevent the kids from accessing and downloading the inappropriate contents from the Internet.
Configuring the proxy server in an office network or in home is beyond the scope of this tutorial. Assuming that a proxy server is already running in your scenario, let’s keep our focus right on Mozilla Firefox and see how you can configure this web browser to go to the proxy server in order to expedite the name resolution process and/or to restrict the access to the unwanted websites:
