Connecting passive sub-woofer to digital Receiver

Hi,

How does one connect a passive sub-woofer (normal speaker wires, red and black kind) to a digital receiver ( has 2 rca, red and white Sub Out)? It's an old amplifier, could not find any manuals on the internet.

use the speaker connections to the left\right speakers to the sub, if you got a crossover in the sub that is.

Hey, thank you. I have no idea what a crossover is, noobie here when it comes down to audio. The amplifier has normal speaker wire connections for the FL, FR, C, SL, and SR. But for the sub it has two rca jacks, red and white....does this mean I might need to get another amp just for the sub-woofer? Will google crossover in the mean time.

you got a 5.1 amplifier, 5 channels powered and a subwoofer signal(no amp)
i bet you got a crossover in the sobwoofer signal path, just fiddle around in the menus of your amp and look.
i had the same problem as you a few years back. i just bought a used power amplifier, they are cheap.

If the sub has a power cord then just connect one of the RCA connections to the RCA subwoofer output on the receiver. Use the speaker setup menu of the receiver to set the front speakers to small and sub to yes.
If it does not have a power cord then you have 2 options. The first is to connect the sub to the front left right speaker connections on the receiver (along with the front L/R speakers). The speaker wire will need to have RCA connections at the subwoofer end. In the speaker setup menu of the receiver set the front speakers to large and the sub to none.
The other option is to add a power amplifier to the passive subwoofer which will make it a powered sub.

if you have rca connectors out of the amp, tghis is line level, not amplified, it can not drive your sub. this means you need an active sub or a sub amp for your passive sub.
