Hi everybody :)

I am so late to the flat panel party but I will be moving on from my Panasonic Tsunami CRT by picking up both a Samsung 55" MU7000 UHD tv and Samsung UBD-K8500 UHD blu-ray player this coming weekend.

I am trying to work out if I can run audio through the HDMI audio out jack on the UBD-K8500 through my now 12 year old Sony HT-DDW1500 receiver which does have HDMI inputs which reads "DVD IN" and "VIDEO 2". There is also a "MONITOR OUT" HDMI port on the receiver.

My technical knowledge is extremely limited so perhaps there's a better option I could explore for sound aside from using HDMI?

I do understand that the older sound codecs on my receiver will not realize optimal sound but it will be my only option aside from the tv speakers for now

Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Thanks everybody :)

Solution
You don't want to pass HDMI through the receiver because it won't pass 4k video and won't benefit by audio over HDMI..
Connect the BD player to the TV with HDMI. Make sure you use an HDMI input that is compatible with 4k. Not all may be.
Connect the TV optical audio output to the receiver optical input, You will need a toslink optical audio cable to do this.
You may have to turn on the optical output and turn the TV speakers off in the TV menu.
You may need to assign the optical connection to an input name in the receiver menu.
You may need to set the BD player to not output lossless audio.
Check the manuals.

Hi amercianaudiophile :)

Thank you so very much for the reply. It seems my receiver does not have an audio optical in, although it has 2 optical video in ports

I'll buy a few cables and experiment over the weekend

Thank you once again for your feedback, much appreciated
