is it possible to connect the PS3 console to the laptop through the HDMI port?

But im not sure if the HDMI port is an input or an output as the side of the laptop did not label it

Unless the port is specifically labeled otherwise, that HDMI port is output only. You can connect the laptop to a TV or monitor using HDMI, but cannot connect a PS3 and play it on the laptop.

That laptop looks to have an HDMI-out not HDMI-in

Laptops very rarely have a HDMI-IN. You would know if it had that.
