Hello all,

on another thread I asked about the dvi cable. I purchased one and it works
with my pc/tv combo. I tried it late at night and had mixed results. Im not
quite sure of which settings are for which version of signal (480/720 etc..)
I have an Ati 9800 pro card providing the signal to the RCA model here
http://tv.rca.com/en-US/ModelDetail.html?PC=52-61&MN=D52W20 . I also use
Windows XP Pro for the operating system. Windows default access to switch
the monitor settings can be a little difficult to deal with while viewing on
the television. I see that I am provided with a few default settings to
chose from. But the higher the resolution, the more the detailed the
picture. But it is leaving so much off the screen. I figured I can use the
zoom feature of the television to alter it, but the feature is not provided
when using my dvi input. One promising part, I ran 3DMark05 and it looks
stunning and seems to fill the screen properly.

I have the program called Powerstrip that Ive installed and have yet to try.
It looks like a good program, but I wanted to know the desired settings so I
can set it before I plug the pc back into the television set.

What are the frequencies that I should chose to view the popular formats
(480/720/1080i) ?

thanks group,
SL

If your TV does 1080i, that's the format I would recommend. I'm not
familiar with the 9800 but my 9550 will let me do a number of things with
the TV side of the display, including extend my desktop onto it or use it
to play DVD's on the computer. And with the component video hooked up,
the Catalyst software will let me send 1080i out the DVI plug (which I
then convert to component because my TV does not have DVI).

I can't fault the result, though I don't really use the feature that
much, since there isn't really that much material on file in 1080i to
watch (though there's plenty being broadcast in either 720p or 1080i,
which my satellite provider sends to me in a format that my STB converts
to 1080i). The STB will even convert SD to that format, but the results
are a little mixed (a bit more aliasing) compared with forcing them to
480p, so I do the latter.

when you bring up your 9550 properties via windows, what settings does it
claim to be using? I dont plan on using multi-monitor which would be
easier. I simply do not have that much space around the TV to accomodate a
big crt 17 in. monitor. So, I was hoping to set the computer up on my
monitor (located in a different room) and then just patch it into the tv
without having to modify any settings. I could set the monitor up
temporarily until I get it right and then remove the monitor and hook the pc
to the tv with my desired settings. But I hoping to just get the correct
settings and go....

The 9550 Catalyst driver gives me settings for three monitors (but only
two can be active at one time). There is my P810, which it treats as a
normal SVGA monitor. Then there is my TV, which can either be an
ordinary 4:3 image using an Svideo connection or can be HDTV 1080i using
my adaptor to the TV's component input from the card's DVI output. In
that case it goes to 16:9 unless I get really creative and try to force
something else. I found that, in the two-monitor scheme, if I played
something on the DivX player, it automatically went to the TV full
screen.

But I did have to play with the settings to get it to do that. I don't
remember now just what they were and I've pretty much turned that stuff
off for lack of anything to play on it. I leave the Svideo up so I can
monitor my 3d renders while watching TV. Just switch to the Svideo input
during commercials. :)
