Went to Costco to buy my DLP TV. the Lcd rear projection Sony and Panasonic
blew it away. I thought DLP was more reliable but now I am back to square
one. Help! Perhaps the LCD rear projection is not so bad after all

What DLP were you going to buy?

Under the bright warehouse lights, even an LCD set looks ok.
But, get it home, and the first dark scene you see, well, if you're like me,
you'll be disappointed (even with my 5k Sony Grand Wega).

Just curious as to why you were dissapointed and what you might have
done differently.

I had a Sony 57xbr2 57" crt rptv and it was simply stunning. But, it
developed the dreaded flicker problem. Sony Service replaced the defective
crts, but never could get the convergence right.

So... rather than get a non-xbr replacement, Sony talked me in to paying
$1500 to *upgrade* to the 60xbr800 lcd set. It's been 2 years of utter
disappointment.

I've always been a Sony fan, ever since my first little transistor radio in
the 60's... but now, I will **never** buy anything with the Sony name on it.

You'll see lots of scary complaints about Samsung. It's probably not quite
that bad, since complainers tend to post more, but still makes you think.

Myself I'm waiting to choose between either the next generation JVC ILA and
the Sony 50 inch A10, both due out late summer.

I bought a Panasonic LCD projection HDTV at Costco last year. After
suffering through the poor black levels for a day or two, I took it back
and got a Samsung DLP instead. I've been delighted with it for almost 18
months now.

In my opinion you're on target. Definitely the Sony LCD projection is
better than DLPs. Personally I like the other 3 options, direct view
lcds, 36" Sony HD CRT, and Plasmas. But your opinion is what's most
important. The thing that bugs me is they are coming out with new and
better products constantly and cheaper. Three months after you buy
something there will be something cheaper and better for sale. Direct
view LCDs are rapidly falling in price and are supposed to continue to
fall.

I love my Sony rear projection LCD set.

I have the 50" Sony and I'm pretty happy with it. The bulb burned out
after a couple of months and it was replaced under warranty (I got the
Best Buy extended warranty which covers bulbs and provides in home
service). It's been about 10 months since the bulb was replaced and I
haven't had any trouble since.

I wouldn't buy an HDTV at Costco unless I owned a pickup truck. Best Buy
and Circuit City have competitive prices and they deliver. These sets are
huge and it's not clear how reliable any of them are. If something fails
you want in home service, schlepping one of these things to a service
center would be a major pain.

Be aware that Costco and many other stores do not display high definition
signals in the store. So it may be difficult to compare high definition
quality of different TVs. How stores expect to sell high definition TVs
without showcasing high definition to the general public in the store just
leaves me.flabbergasted.

The guy at my local Costco swears that they are feeding their tvs
with HD. I tried to explain to him that just because he is feeding
them with component cables doesn't mean it's HD. I know HD when I see
it and this ain't HD it's a crummy SD.

Ditto. the Samsung DLPs have blacker blacks and no possibility of burn-in or
dead pixels. Mine has been a joy for almost a year. Properly calibrated, it
blows away the LCDs.

DLp gives betterricher colors and smoother motion. Lcd was originally
designed as a static display for watches and alarm clocks etc. Therefore lcd
gives you a better picture with stationary images. It is the sharpest micro
rear projection available imho. The only downfall is with qucik movement
pixelation artifacts drag behind objects. With dlp you dont get this as
much. So get dlp if you want better motion or colors get lcd if you want a
sharper picture. Compromise there is no "best" that does it all
