Don't block the vents or place it on the stove or in the oven (microwave or
conventional) <wink>

Assuming the notebook has a monitoring chip, try hardware monitor or
MobileMeter

Personally I think it is a design fault with my laptop and just about every
other one I have seen - the air intake is underneath, so if you actually use
the laptop on your lap, you block the air intake - I now carry around a
portable lap for my portable laptop computer!

I got some stiff cardboard and built up the areas where the laptop feet go,
so the carboard goes under the laptop and the air can still circulate round
the fan intake, when the PC is on a fabric or squashy surface that would
otherwise block the fans.

Check under your laptop - you might find the same problem - you are block
the air vents!

Sounds daft but it works!

Not very useful for carrying around but excellent for on the desk or on the
lap whilst couch surfing...

The fans are definitely audible, though the
noise is not serious enough to make a big
difference.

I use the same one. I actually carry mine with me everywhere. It is plenty
small enough to fit in my bag, and with the weight (lack of), I can't even
tell I have it. I wish they were a little wider, as my widescreen notebook
hangs off the edges, but the feet still sit on it. What surprised me was how
silent the fans were. I was expecting to atleast hear them. The only time I
have ever heard them running was late at night in the living room with
nothing on but it.

I don't expect free lunch, but I like to see the price before I order,
to belabor the metaphor.

For the aforementioned Targus, other respondents also claim it is very
quiet, which is great.

I personally hate the accumulated noise that intrudes into my senses
as the rotational speed, size, & number of fans in computer systems
increase. It is so...pervasive, perpetual. My next desktop will
likely be a mini-itx net'd to more powerful server hidden away
elsewhere.

Got something similar (a Yate-Loon) for my TP-600 (not really a
"hottie," but still...). The HDD has temp monitoring, which is displayed
in the systray thanks to a small freeware app. called dTemp (which also
has SMART monitoring).

Without the fans running, the HDD remp can exceed 45C, with them on, the
temp drops by 6-8 degrees in roughly 5 minutes (give or take--actual
results will vary depending on ambient temp and overall system load).

That may not seem like much, but trust me, in laptop terms, it's
significant. Plus, these laptop coolers provide a "buffer" between the
hot laptop and your lap.

i found the best and cheapest solution to stop my laptop over heating



an empty tictac box

i put it under the back of the laptop and it lifts the air intake up about
an inch from the tray or table it sits on

and it hasnt over heated since

my gf uses a "lap tray"

will give a clue, cheaper than those things with fans, uses no battery
power and I'm sure they can be found cheaper in the mall/high street
😉

or get someone to make you one, it's only a tin tray with a beanbag
underneath 😱P

Question to a question but does your laptop actually overheat ? i.e. is it
crashing.

I have a variety of laptops admittedly the fastest is only a Thinkpad A31
with a P41.8 but I have never had one crash.
I often play 3D games especially on the A31 and yes the bottom gets hot but
it does not crash.

They lower a few degrees, but they are pretty handy - they are always there. They are nice islands under the machine to keep me from burning my legs. I put my machine - a MacBook hotplate from 2006 - on a fan at my main desk.
