CPU Upgrade from i7-2630QM to i7-2860QM with an Intel HM65 Mainboard

Dear Community,

I am planning on upgrading my laptop, a sony vaio f21z1e/bi with a i7-2630QM cpu.

My laptop uses an intel hm65 mainboard with a PGA988 (G2) BGA 1023 socket and the Bios version R0200V3 (02/10/2011).

The new cpu I am looking for is the faster brother of the current version, so I believe, the i7-2860QM. Both cpu share similar traits. They are both sandy bridge, feed on 45watt, utilize the same socket.

I am not sure if this endeavor can lead to a success. Do you have any suggestions as well as experiences to share with me? Do you think I have to update the bios as well?

mhh, havent heard of anything like that before to be honest. I dont know whether or not the cpu is soldered to the mainboard. I believe it is not.

I am planning on solely replacing the cpu using the same/old mainboard.
According to the software CPU-Z my cpu uses the socket 988B rPGA. Hence I believe the motherboard uses the PGA988

I believe that you are correct. If CPU-Z reported BGA, then it would be soldered. My bad.

Is a BGA the same as PGA988 respectively 988B rPGA.
However, how would that effect the replacement? And besides, to my knowledge, the cpu can be removed from the motherboard.

Heck, to be honest, I don't know. We need an expert to answer that. I don't know if this helps or not:

You can probably search for other relevant information if that doesn't make it clear. Sorry I'm not more help.

To me, it looks like the distance between pins on an rPGA are closer together than the pins on a PGA, if I'm reading it correctly. Beyond that, I'm lost.

Hey, thanks for you answer, now the description make a little more sense to me.

However, according to this website, both the cpus, the stronger 2860qm and the current 2630qm use the rPGA988B socket. This information is the same as provided by intel. Presumably the cpu would fit and are interchangeable. Hence they do not seem to be soldered

They are sure not soldered, i have same socket as you, the only soldered cpus are the ones with m at the end but this is not your case, be sure the motherboard supports the new cpu even if i have same socket as you and also my cpu is not soldered, i cannot install any cpu, i m limited by the motehrboard.

how can I find out whether my mainboard supports this cpu?
According to this website: click the 2680qm should be supported

Unfortunately I wasnt able to find any information about that matter.
But, I was able to find a similar notebook for the asian pacific market, the VPCF237HG with the exact same cpu. It seems as though this laptop uses the same motherboard which is why I believe it could work even though I am not sure. Thats why I am here to ask the community

rayden san did you try it? i just bought the cpu 2860qm to replace my 2630qm and now I have a black screen on start up. when i reinstall the older cpu it works just fine. i've done the ram uninstall reinstall. the drain power and everything and even updated the bios to the nov. 2011 version
the cpu 2860qm came out in sept 2011. I NEED HELP!
