What is the quality on these discs? I was thinking about purchasing one to
check it out. How sharp is the picture?

Criterion did the same work on LD that they do on DVD now. Their discs
aren't any sharper than anyone else's. They restore classic films using
the best available source elements.

Depends on the laserdisc in question. If it's rare or not available on
DVD, then it's definitely worth buying.

<<The CAV version was Criterion.>>

Well than maybe it was a CLV disc. Either way, I've been told that the
older non-Criterion disc had superior image quality.

I've heard that the older CAv release of the anime flick "Akira" had superior
video quality to the Criterion version, although I can't verify this myself.
It's also possible that a newer, studio-released version of a movie, on LD or
DVD, could be of higher quality in it's video presentation than the older
Criterion version. Criterion has been re-releasing some of the older DVDs with
new transfers and/or anamorphic video because older discs didn't all have it.

If restoring classic films using the best available source elements is a
"ripoff", then yeah I guess they're a huge giant ripoff.

The CAV version was Criterion.

Not at all. When LDs were big, most of the Criterion releases were teh best
available. YOu seem to be starting out in collecting rather recently, any
reason you would want to pick up so many LDs of movies that would have in
most cases a cheaper and better DVD release?

I don't know I was always fascinated with the laserdisc player we had in my
middle school science class. I just wanted to get one to see how they are.
Plus there was a really rare music LD i had wanted for years and then
found for sale.

I don't have a bunch, but I can find alot under $5 on eBay. Too bad alot
of the newer movies are so expensive though.

Criterion released both the CLV & the CAV - There were other non Criterion
releases in Japan and a French PAL release.
Perhaps you mean to say that the image quality of the CAV is superior to the
CLV, both being Criterion releases. I have the CAV and it is acceptable
although I've never compared it to the other Criterion LD. I've kept it
mainly for: Its extras, It's a Criterion and it cost so much when I bought
it that I would feel terrible "giving" it away.

He he he, that CAV editon is a true keeper, I am with you there. The
picture is also very "acceptable". It is too bad my player has the
CAV-bug which gives you some broad horizontal stipes mostly visible on
big panes of little differentiation.

Sounds like you need your laser realigned.

Well, I had heard, very specifcally, that the Criterion release was not
as good, in terms of video quality, as the non-Criterion editions that
had been out before it. Maybe it was a Japanese-market release that the
person was speaking of, but he certainly meant that it was NOT a
Criterion release. I've never done the comparison myself.

www.lddb.com is indispensable for researching laserdisc. No reviews or any
information pertaining to quality (other than the sparse comments) It's use
will save time and hopefully misinformation :)

Oh, that should be done anyway ;) I'm just a bit wary about giving it
into service. And then it's a CLD-925, they just have that bug :(

<<www.lddb.com is indispensable for researching laserdisc.>>

I use the database regularly. But as I said, there were multiple
non-Criterion foreign (non-U.S.) market releases of Akira and I simply
can't remember which version the person was speaking of. And again,
I've never had the chance to do a comparison myself so I couldn't say
how accurate this claim was.
