Hi. I shoot instructional hobby videos for my youtube channel, and currently use a very old Sony that uses mini-dv tapes. The reason I got it was that I needed a camcorder that had an external mic input. It is only standard def, and I pull video off it using a firewire adapter. Despite good lighting and some post effects, the video is still grainy, especially when zoomed to full screen.

Are there any decent 1080 cameras that have external mic input? I'd like to make these videos look more professional. Using Adobe After Effects. Firewire or usb3 is a plus.

Thanks.

Here's one that might interest you: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/56276-31-decent-1080-camera-external-jack It has a jack for an external mic and one for headphones. I mention the headphone jack because it is important to monitor audio as you record. Most newer camera are not going to have the firewire connection as they record to SD cards which makes transfer to the computer considerably faster.

Personally I would go with a Canon, Sony or Panasonic.

Thanks. I definitely monitor the audio when I record, and the
Canon VIXIA HF R300 Full HD Camcorder looks like it will fit the bill. Only thing I don't see is a hot shoe, but this isn't a deal-breaker for my intended use. It will be nice to finally get away from tapes and move up to a much higher resolution.
