dell 15-7569 laptop flickering...bad ribbon or chip?

it works great, then by moving the lid up & down, i can eventually get it to flicker, along with the red light (where the camera is) rapidly blinking.

i hooked up an external monitor and it works fine until i get the unit to start blinking again.

does this mean the video chip needs replacement, or can a bad ribbon also affect the external monitor?

does the external monitor blink too when the internal screen blinks? if not then a bad cable as not a ribbon version in the left hinge area.

yes, the external doesn't work when the main monitor flickers. does that mean it isn't the ribbon/cable?

as the hinge is metal, it could be rubbing some of the exposed wires in the damaged cable causing momentary blinking on both screens. will have to expose that cable in the hinge area to move it from the metal to see if both screens stop blinking. this also gives you a chance to inspect the cable in that area.
