Dell connection problem

I've been trying to connect my dell Inspiron 17 laptop to my tv monitor using an hdmi cable. The laptop screen turns black and the tv monitor says "no signal". I've tried to go through control panel and switch between modes like "projection to monitor" and still no results. Can anyone share a solution or give a response if they experienced the same dillema?

If the video resolution of the laptop is higher than the TV can handle it may say no signal. You can usually change it in the video drive control panel. Set the TV as your extended screen (display 2) and you can set the resolution for it separately.
An incompatible cable may also be the problem especially if it is a long one.
Also you may have to switch the input of the TV away from the one your laptop is connected to and back again to get it to sync.
