Dell Laptop startup too slow

hey
my laptop has almost turned 4 years old
it used to be fine earlier
but i recently gave it to my nephew
hes young and doesnt know too much about computers
when i got it back recently
i saw that hes unknowingly downloaded a lot of malware
and also the startup has become very very slow
there is a 45-60 second blackscreen after the welcome window
that means it takes about 4-5 mins to startup

just want to know whether is happening because of those unwanted softwares
or is it a hardware issue?
i know hard disks tend to wear out with time
not that the startup was lightening fast earlier
but it way too slow now

plese help
what should i do?

Scan it with MalwareBytes and your anti-virus program. Google anything that appears to not have been resolved.
