I recently was given a D620 from a friend that has Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS on it.. one problem it has is that the fan doesn't seem to be working and it just overheats.

Whenever I turn the laptop on the fan would spin for a few seconds or so and then stop, the fan worked for a second and stopped when using a command with something called i8kutils.

Anyone have an Idea on what may be causing this?
The laptop is also clean on the inside, I didn't remove the fan but I get enough room to clean it.
I don't have the option right now to remove the fan and doing so would mean removing the laptops heatsink.

Dell Latitude D620
1.5gb DDR2 ram
Geniune Intel CPU T2300 @ 1.66 GHz
Intel(r) 945GM x86/MMX/SSE2
32 bit
40GB

Thanks in advance.

Solution
I found a solution myself, I used something called i8kutils/i8kfan/i8kmon
I used the following urls to help me set it up:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/490292/dell-fans-not-working

http://askubuntu.com/questions/522954/setting-temperature-thresholds-in-i8kmon-ubuntu-14-04/527333#527333Icon=text-html

When it comes to editing i8kmon.conf when you type
sudo gedit /etc/i8kmon.conf
enter your computers password

I entered the following in that file:
0 {{-1 0} -1 40 -1 40}
1 {{-1 1} 40 60 40 60}
2 {{-1 2} 60 128 60 128}

If you have the...
Maybe replace the fan? the 600 series is quite old. I have the D630 myself.

You could if you wanted to cheap out, possibly get a Fan to usb. Which means like a cooler you attach to the laptop while using it to provide cooling.

I'm sure the internal fans nowadays are inexpensive.

* Just a few suggestions nothing special.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm just waiting for other peoples replies incase anyone has had simular problems.

If you have the same problem on a windows computer, theres a program by the same name here.. that works pretty much after install with no setup unlike ubuntu:
