Digital-analog converter takes over my Luxman receiver

I bought a FiiO D03K digital to analog audio converter so I could send audio from my digital-optical-output television to my analog-only Luxman receiver (mid 1980's vintage). I connected the optical cable from the TV to the converter and the RCA cables from the converter to the Tape Monitor input on the receiver. The result: the sound from the converter is audible when Tape Monitor is NOT selected, and it is the only thing that's audible. It blots out signals from any of the other inputs on the receiver (AM/FM, CD, Phono). When Tape Monitor is selected, there is silence. Does anyone know why this happens and what I can do to correct it (if anything)? Thank you very much for your help.
