i have my set top box, xbox, chromecast all hooked up to my TV via HDMI. I'm planning on getting a sound bar and i notice that my TV only has the digital coax output. if i get a converter and hook it to my sound bar, will it mean that all audio that goes into the tv currently via the xbox, chromecast, set top box will be transmitted to the sound bar?

Solution
That is completely wrong information. I think he is getting mixed up with which 'coax' connection the op is using. They are using the DIGITAL audio coax output. The coaxial digital audio connection is used to send S/PDIF digital audio signals between devices.
It supports stereo audio as well as DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1/7.1 surround sound signals.
It does not support DVD-A, SACD or high-definition audio such as DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD, so if you want to play back this type of audio, you will probably be better of using an HDMI connection

Good luck!

Apart from 'maybe' having to go into your settings on the tv and selecting the digital audio out, it should work fine. The only problem one can sometimes run into, is when you have an analogue sound input. But you have everything running via HDMI.

Let us know how you get on!

Judging by other questions asked here, it's quite possible that only audio coming from TV aerial will come out of coax port. And in your case this would mean, "nothing".

Check with your TV manual, or call their support, before posting another question "How to connect soundbar to TV and have sound from everything".

thanks. that is what i am afraid of as well.
that the SPDIF will only transmit the TV tuner/aerial audio.
i do not want to invest in the SPDIF cable, converter, toslink cable if i cant confirm this.
Looks like i have to use the headphone jack on the TV and connect it to the soundbar.

model of the tv is a Philips 58PFT5309 and philips cant answer my question

ok.
so this is the scenario.
i have the xbox, blu ray and set top box connected to the tv via hdmi. the tv has no HDMI ARC or toslink output. only SPDIF output and headphone output.
the soundbar has a aux in and toslink input.
if i connect the tv to the soundbar via spdif>converter>toslink input, will i get all the sound that is coming in to my TV's HDMI inputs or will it only transmit sound that originates from the tv (tuner/aeria which is nothing since i dont use itl)
soundbar is a sony ct80 2.1 channel if that helps.

Yes, it takes SPDIF Digital Audio from the TV and converts it to Toslink optical output which will fit your soundbar. No, the coax that the aerial uses and the 'coax' digital connection are completely different things. Not related, or has anything to do with which sound will be outputted thru the 'digital' coaxial output.
