Digital Satellite Quality on HDTV Set?

Hi all,

My 5-year old 27" Sony Wega broke down, so I thought I would upgrade to
an HDTV set. After some research, I got the Samsung SlimFit 30" HDTV
set. I have two problems with it:

1. Immediately, I noticed that straight lines aren't very straight, and
tried to fiddle with the service mode options, but to no avail. Googling
showed me that most other owners of this same set are experiencing
similar problems.

2. Most of what I watch is from digital satellite. I noticed that the
picture quality of non-HDTV signal looks much worse on the Samsung than
on my old Sony Wega or any other non-HDTV set.

So, I'm thinking of returning the Samsung, and getting another one. My
main question is which HDTV set best displays regular digital satellite
signals? How would it compare to an EDTV set, or to my old Sony Wega?
Shall I take the plunge and go with HDTV, or stick with EDTV?

Thanks,
--Ala

Several people on AVSForum.com are reporting poor picture quality
and poor geometry on the Samsung Slimfit so you're not alone.

DirecTV uses too much digital compression and the higher resolution
of an HD-ready set often exposes these flaws where an old analog set
would not. I've seen it sometimes on several friends' HD tubes,
plasmas, and on rear projection sets. I have TWC cable and do
not get these artifacts when watching SD on my 32" HD tube TV
or HD plasma. My next door neighbor has a similar TV but DirecTV
and she has the artifacting. It's not always there but rears it's
ugly head during fast motion scenes, camera panning, and at
various random times for no apparent reason. It's the source,
not the TV.
