[citation][nom]burfordg[/nom]Yes, but piracy is still a lot lower on consoles than it is on PCs, because you don't void your warranty when you pirate for PCs, and it's a lot harder to get caught. I think one of the big reasons people are complaining is simply due to the fact that by eliminating dedicated servers, it ruins chances for pirates to play the game illegally.I saw that on Kotaku earlier today, and I gotta ask: what is that about hosts having 0 ping in MW2? I do believe that an article posted here on Tom's specifically stated that the game would provide roughly the same ping for everyone.[/citation]

0 ping for the host of the match obviously, while others may struggle with 100+ ping which is more than likely. I know many of my friends who are plagued by lag on the Xbox 360. Everyone having equal ping will not happen. I think you're confused, and if not, show me the article.

And I wouldn't make light of the piracy rate on the 360, it's a vast and growing sector. And complaining about no dedicated servers is not about the ability to pirate it and play on cracked servers. It's about an equal playing field for clan matches, where all users will have decent ping. And obviously with dedicated servers comes the ability for more players, the reason for 9v9 is because with more, it would be horrendous.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, I may be. But the host of the match decides to kick/ban players, correct? What if you get hosts that are 12 year old kids who kick you for hacking when you aren't, or the host is hacking themselves. Dedicated servers have admins to kick/ban any cheaters, it's a better system.

If it ruins the chance to play the game illegally then maybe you can explain why there is more console availability for pirated games than PC games. Piracy is a lot higher on consoles than you think. It has been going on for years now, the xbox and ps2 had tons of pirated games. It is much more difficult to catch pirated console games being used because it is a hardware change. Who cares if the warranty is voided. You would get your money back after 3 games. Two friends of mine have 20 pirated titles on their 360s. 20 titles and not so much as a ban, kick, or warning. You may not think much of it but they have already gone through the single player campain of MW2. I watched, there are no real graphics upgrades, everything there was already able to be turned on with the PC version of MW. They just slapped another layer of AA on. Not to mention the game is incredibly short. It is just a different story line. You are going to pay $60 for something that should have been an expansion.

No one should buy this for PC.

I hate Steam because it ties a game to your account, making reselling it or passing it along to friends impossible. Plus I really hate how it manages games in the Steam folder on your computer and runs in the background, hogging resources. It's not a trojan, but it is bloatware.

Steam has a lot of bugs and is very frustrating to use. They have been having a lot of connection issues lately and now I cant play the games I paid for. Not even offline games..

If you look in steams help forums you can see how many people are having problems but there is no word from valve.

Steam works perfectly for me, bullhawk.

Ominous, I'm trying and failing to find the article, sorry. I thought it was really weird when the guy said that everyone was getting around 100ms, so I don't claim to know how it's supposed to make sense. It was either on here or Kotaku.

"Piracy is a lot higher on consoles than you think."

It might be higher than I think, but it doesn't even come close to approaching the levels on PC.

[citation][nom]kyeana[/nom]I was about to get all excited that a retailer was taking a stance against all the shit they did to the pc version of MW2, and refuse to sell it. Instead it is just complaining agaist steam. Sad times[/citation]

Never heard the expression, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"?

@gamerjames
Get your facts straight. Quake Live uses or will use p2p for private matches however the pub servers are dedicated and owned by ID hence why the ingame ads.

MW2 is PURE p2p and there is a big difference. Also considering the console is gone... configuring snaps, cl_maxpackets, and rate int he game is most likely going to be gone. I run snaps 30 , cl_maxpackets 100 , and rate 25k (default I am guessing) and I see anywhere from a 10 - 20ms difference in ping. these options you can pretty much bet on that they wont be available to people who get MW2 since it is basically a 360 port with custom pc like things such as mouse and kb control and graphics options.

[citation][nom]montezuma[/nom]You like Steam? I mean, do not get me wrong, I use Steam to purchase some games. My problem is the fact that Steam believes that it has the right to tell customers they cannot resale their games. That is wrong on so many fronts and the Autodesk case proved that the customer owns the software they pay for.It is this reason alone that I do not purchase more expensive titles through Steam. If Steam would accept the fact that we own what we(customers) pay for, then I would be open to purchase all of my games through them.[/citation]

You are wrong. You NEVER own software, you are only paying a license to be entitled to use it. It's not yours, it belongs to the people that made it. Beseides, if you want to resell your games buy a retail copy! Oh, but so many games are starting to have activation limits, much hardder to sell now! Are you going to bash them too or just Steam?

Ohhh great, finaly some retailers stand up to the self serving twats known as Activision but not because they're completely screwing over the pc market, oh no, but because of Steam which is ultimately a very useful platform..
Calling it a 'Trojan' when it's nothing of the sort could get them in some real trouble though.

[citation][nom]precariousgray[/nom]This just in: Consumers refusing to buy Modern Warfare 2 due to lack of compelling features.[/citation]
 Well played man.

I suggest you look up the definition of a Trojan. Steam fits the bill pretty nicely, STEAM can Upload files to you, and download them from you without your permission. Before anyone says this is Automatic, ie "OPT-OUT" rather than an "OPT-IN" service. STEAM can also modify/delete the files in your STEAM folder. now as far as i am concerned that makes it entirely possible for it to Modify/Delete files in other places to. Oh wait it does.

But that aside i do like Steam, works really quite well in all honesty. I cant say i like the way some games have to have STEAM installed. I actually thought CoD4's approach was best, where the retail did not require Steam. The only gripe i have with steam is that i have yto put all my eggs in one basket. Yeah i could have multiple accounts but thats a bit of a pain. For instance, if my CoD4 key gets stolen, i lose £30 quid buying the game again. If my STEAM account gets stolen (Or VaLVE revoke it) i lose something like £500.

I just hope that sales of the PC version are abyssmal. I couldnt give a shit about the console versions, there shit anyway (CoD3 anyone?). Hopefully IW will find out just how hard they screwed the pooch on this.

BRAVO Direct Drive! You are SUPPORTING GAMERS! Why should we have to install Steam if we don't want it? If it isn't coming with an OPT OUT checkbox then SCREW THEM!

[citation][nom]ominous prime[/nom]There have also been massive amounts of cancellations on pre-orders but we shall see.[/citation]
A few thousand lost pre-orders from the die-hard fans will not put a dent in the sales made to "regular" consumers who just buy a game because it has CoD in the title, or because it looks like a good game from the info on the back of the box.

This game will sell, and it will sell well. As good as CoD4? Maybe not, that remains to be seen.

Several million dollars are already lost in pre-orders, but more sales than that will likely be lost because the people who pre-order are the same people who go to all their friends and say, "Hey, buy this game, it's awesome." I bet every lost pre-order is 3 real lost sales. And several million dollars IS a dent.

Oh, and IIRC, Modern Warfare 2 doesn't have CoD in the name.

With all the fuzz around this game lately, I think it's a good kick in the groin for Activision. Their flagship title not available via Direct2drive + angry PC gamers = a hell of a mess for a sure million seller.
